HVAC Professional in Norfolk, VirginiaIn order to be set for the cold winter season, you should start thinking about your heating unit before the cold temperatures start to roll in.  The same goes preparing for summer and air conditioning.   It’s best to stay on top of repairs and maintenance and keep your HVAC system working properly beforehand.  You want  to avoid being in a chilly or sticky situation without heat or air conditioning.

If something is wrong and you don’t know about it until the day you decide to turn your heat or air on for the first time, you could be facing some cold or hot nights … along with some high costs to fix the problem quickly.

Here are some signs that you may need to bring in an HVAC professional:

Something is Different

Your HVAC system can seem to be working, but have times where it’s just acting differently.  Any irregularities could be a sign that you should call your HVAC repair professional in to check things out. Catching problems sooner, rather than later is an important component of keeping your HVAC system working optimally and can save you money in the long run.  An inefficient system may require more electricity or gas.

Unexplained Bill Increases

If you suddenly get a huge electric or gas bill that is much more than it out of line with past bills and you haven’t made any usage changes,  it may be time to call your HVAC repair professional. There are issues that can pop up with an HVAC system that makes it work poorly or incorrectly.  These problems can cause spikes in your heating bill. The assistance of an HVAC specialist should help to get your bill back to normal.

Decline in Performance

If you start to notice that some rooms are colder than they used to be, while some are hotter than they used to be, or other declines in performance of your HVAC system, it’s time to call in a professional. A reputable HVAC contractor knows how to test your system to find out why some rooms are unequally heated and why any other decline in performance might happen.  They can recommend solutions to correct the uneven temperatures across your home.

Strange Sounds or Smells

If you begin hearing strange noises when your HVAC system cycles on and off, this is a sign that there may be a problem. Most modern heating systems should be pretty quiet and should not “clunk” on and off. Nor should the sound of your system running be getting louder and louder.  If your conditioned air smells like burning for more than a few minutes after turning on the unit, turn it off.  Your heating system professional will know the common causes of this problem and be able to repair it.

Not Working at All

If you HVAC system stops working altogether, you will be without heat or cooling.  If it is fall or winter, you may be tempted to wait to call your HVAC professional, but waiting weeks or longer may make the problem even worse.  This is especially true if you are running a gas powered unit.  Be sure to contact your HVAC professional quickly to get the repairs you need.

Only an experienced and well-trained HVAC professional will be able to determine the condition of your HVAC system. They can find out if your problems are small, as well as major issues with your gas lines. When there are signs of trouble, it’s important to call a professional right away. Nipping problems in the bud earlier will always save you substantial amounts of money over waiting until an issue grows worse or completely breaks down.

I like your tip to call an HVAC technician if a bill increases dramatically. That happened to me last month. My bills are almost always consistent and steady, so I think there might be something wrong.

I noticed my energy bill is more than it was last month even though I’ve been running my AC unit at the same frequency. According to the article, this is a sign I might need to call an HVAC professional to come out and look at it. What tips do you have for finding an HVAC professional?

It’s good to know when to call an HVAC pro. Our system is working fine, but it does seem to be acting a little different than normal. I guess that means we should call a pro to come and look at it.
